This course is designed to rediscover the figure of Mari from a critical perspective, examining the historical and cultural influences that have shaped her various representations, her role within the Basque worldview, her evolution over time, and the beliefs and folk practices associated with her veneration.

It will consist of two distinct parts, each lasting two hours. The first part will take a theoretical approach and will explore the following topics:

1) Mari’s role in the Basque cosmology, acting as both ruler and a link between the three realms (sky, earth, and the underworld)

2) A historical overview of the different cultures that coexisted in the Basque territories and contributed to shaping the Lady as we know her today

3) The aspects and manifestations of Mari, highlighting seven key facets and comparing how she appears in different locations according to environmental characteristics

4) Mari’s relationship with other numinous beings and spirits, particularly her close relatives, male companions, the Lamiak, the Sorginak, and other entities.

The second part will provide practical guidance, including:

5) Ways of approaching the Lady respectfully, in accordance with her values and codes of conduct

6) Taboos and behaviours to avoid that may be considered offensive

7) Historical changes in the practices used to honour her, focusing on what should be preserved at their core and which elements may be more flexible

8) Basic protocols for establishing and maintaining a connection with her, in line with Basque traditions.

The first session will be pre-recorded so that participants can watch it at their convenience, and it will be available on 16th May. The following week, on Sunday 23rd May, the practical session will be delivered live via Zoom, allowing attendees to bring their questions and engage in discussion around the topics covered.

Both sessions will be recorded and available for later viewing. In addition, each part includes presentation materials, along with relevant bibliography and further reading resources. There will also be a forum where participants can continue to ask questions and exchange reflections. Private enquiries may also be submitted via email.

All recordings, presentations, materials, and forum access will remain available for one month.
